Shirley’s Coffee House – Beaverton

Shirley's Coffee House

Beaverton Bakery has been an institution in the city of Beaverton and Portland Metro area since 1925. Everyone knows about their great bread, cakes, pies and assorted bake goods, but if you are looking for a good deli sandwich and a bowl of soup for lunch Don’t forget about Shirley’s Coffee House.

Roast Beef On Rye and Tomato Bisque Soup

Shirley’s Coffee House is owned and operated by the folks at Beaverton Bakery. It’s a small and quiet place with only about 8 or 9 tables located on the same block as the bakery. Shirley’s is an excellent place to go for a good cup of coffee and a donut, you can sit at your table and watch donuts being made in the bakery while you eat. but they also have really good sandwich and soup combos . You can get a half sandwich for $2.95 or a full sandwich for $4.95, add a cup of soup for only $1.00.  This week I tried The Roast Beef On Rye and Tomato Bisque Soup and it was excellent (you can’t get the bread much fresher when the bakery is right there).

Donuts Being Made In The Bakery

So next time your at the  bakery around lunch time picking up your favorite baked good, take a few minutes and walk down to the corner and give Shirley’s a try. You won’t be disappointed.

Beaverton – Panera Bread – Bakery – Cafe

Panera Bread - Bakery - Cafe

The Sandwich is known to be one of the most iconic lunch foods around, and Panera Bread brings this lunch time favorite justice. Their fresh breads, bakery products, soups and sandwiches are often voted the “best of” in the markets wherever they are located. Panera Bread Bakery-Café was founded by Louis Kane and Ron Shaich in 1981. Since then the company has been very prosperous, and is located all around the country. This Saturday my father and I headed out to one of the Panera Cafes located at 3435 Southwest Cedar Hills Boulevard, Beaverton, Oregon. The first thing we notice when walking into the café was how crowded the place was. This was a sure hint that the food was going to be great!

Almond Chicken Salad Sandwich

Chicken-Bacon Panini

I ordered a Chicken-Bacon Panini-$6.86 made with chicken, Applewood-Smoked bacon, and swish cheese, and my father ordered an Almond Chicken Salad Sandwich-$6.86 made with chicken, fresh celery, seedless grapes, sliced almond, and their special dressing.

The Chicken-Bacon Panini was delicious! The sandwich was served hot, and grilled. The bread was fresh, and the slightly peppery chicken and bacon with Swiss cheese were mouth watering.  I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of this sandwich. My father also enjoyed his sandwich, “It was better than your average sandwich, the bread was really fresh and the almond and grapes included in the chicken salad were a nice touch!”

Pecan Roll

Cinnamon Coffee Cake

Although the sandwiches were awesome, the desserts were less than impressive. For dessert we ordered a piece of Cinnamon Coffee Cake and a Pecan Roll, both costing around $2.00. By looking at the desserts they looked amazing, but once we started to dig into them we realized that desserts did not taste nearly as fresh as the bread.

If you are looking for a good sandwich, Panera Bread is your place! If you are looking for a tasty sweet dessert, if what we had that day was typical, you might want to try another bakery. - Jessi Marlow/Beaverton Lunch

Best Baguette – Beaverton

best baguette

The name of the restaurant says it all! If you are looking for a foot long sandwich at a great price, this is your place. This Saturday my daughter and I decided to visit the Beaverton location (they also have a location at 8303 SE Powell Blvd in Portland) and we were pleasantly surprised.

We went up to the counter and asked the server what their most popular sandwich was and she pointed out that the menue offered two styles of the Baguette sandwiches Asian (served with house mayo, pickled carrot & daikon, jalapeno, cilantro & soy sauce) and French (served with mayo lettuce, tomato and cheese).

The server recomended  the Asian - Grilled Pork (thinly sliced pork marinated in lemongrass & soy dressing) and the Pork Roll & Egg (Saigon Style). We gave it some thought and decided to give these two sandwiches a try.

After the first bite we were both big fans, and my daughter Jessi concluded, “These are some of the best sub sandwiches I have ever had” . The bread – baked on the premises was super fresh and crispy and the grilled pork, sauces and veggies made a perfect combination. The topping on the cake was that the prices were only $2.95 for the grilled pork and $3.35 for the pork roll & egg.

Best Baguette also offer Croissant Sandwiches, Salads, Pastries, Breads and a selection of drinks including Bubble Tea & Italian Sodas.

We tried a Cream Horn for dessert (a crispy pastry with cream filling and topped with chocolate sprinkles) and it was excellent.

So if you’re looking for a really good sandwich at a great price, give Best Baguette a try, you won’t be disappointed.
